What Are Tocotrienols (Tocos)?
Don’t let the long, scientific sounding name scare you. Tocotrienols, most commonly referred to as tocos, are actually quite a simple superfood. Tocos powder is a fat-soluble relative of the vitamin E family and is usually derived from water soluble rice bran, although you can also find tocotrienols naturally in palm oil, oat, barely, wheat germ and other seeds or fruits. It’s a terrific source of vitamin E and quite the crowd pleaser when it comes to the flavor to health benefit ratio. Often described as mildly sweet and creamy in taste and texture, it’s makes the perfect addition to anything from tea and coffee to smoothies, oatmeal, matcha or recipes that call for thickening agents like flour or cream. Some even eat it by the spoonful or use in their facial treatments!
There are four forms of both tocotrienols and tocopherols: alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Each have different functions and offer a variety of health benefits. Humans consume much more tocopherols in their diet, a similar member of the Vitamin E family, but with different chemical makeup, so taking tocotrienols provides an alternative way to introduce a slightly different form of vitamin E into your diet.
